HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As always, Thursday is a busy day for high school sports. The top of the list is one of the largest high school cross country meets in the area as Buhler, Nickerson and Trinity Catholic participate in the Buhler Invitational. The meet begins at 4:30 p.m. at Westar Prairie Ridge Park, which is across the street from Prairie Hills Middle School.

Central Christian is also in action as the Cougars travel to the Stafford Invitational starting at 4 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk soccer team had a tough night at the USD 308 complex and lost to Goddard Eisenhower 7-1.

Wyatt Johnson scored the lone goal for the Hawks. Cameron Shaner got the assist.

The Hawks fall to 1-4-1 on the season and return to action Thursday when they host Goddard. The JV match begins at 5 p.m. The varsity will follow around 6:30.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College sophomore Jaylen Erwin provided the spark the Blue Dragons were looking for last Saturday against No. 2 Iowa Western.

Trailing by 24 points late in the third quarter, the sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, returned a punt for a touchdown and earned Jayhawk Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

While the rally fell short as No. 11 Hutchinson fell to Iowa Western 33-24, it probably wouldn’t have gotten that close without Erwin.

With just 6 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Blue Dragons trailed the Reivers 31-7. Erwin returned a punt 74 yards for a score to start a run of 17-unanswered points by Hutchinson, which made it a one-possession game.

Erwin averaged 33.5 yards per return on Saturday and had one kickoff return for 26 yards. He also had three receptions for 61 yards.

Erwin now has three touchdowns this season. Those touchdowns have come from an average of 53 yards per scoring play.

AMARILLO, Texas – Freshman Charlie Crockett shot an even-par 71 on Tuesday to close out one of the most impressive debuts in Hutchinson Community College men’s golf history.

Crockett finished fourth overall at the West Texas State A&M’s Ryan Palmer Foundation Invite at the Tascosa Golf Club. Crockett was the top Blue Dragon player as Hutchinson finished in a tie for seventh place with Wayland Baptist University.

The Blue Dragons shot a tournament-high 291 on Tuesday to close out at 6-over 858. The Dragons posted rounds of 280 and 287 on Monday. St. Mary’s (TX) led the team race wire-to-wire, winning by eight strokes with a 16-under 836.

The only true blemish to Crockett’s Blue Dragon debut was a triple-bogey 8 on the par-5 17th hole. He also recorded three more birdies and a bogey on Tuesday. Crockett played 7-under through the first two rounds, which included a pair of eagles.

Crockett finished seven strokes off the pace of St. Mary’s Emilio Gonzalez, who won with a 14-under 199 score for 54 holes.

Freshman Charlie Herbert finished tied for 22nd overall for Hutchinson. His 2-over 73 on Tuesday gave him a three-round score of 214.

Freshman Cameron Probert and Nathan McCulloch finished tied for 58th at 224. Probert shot a 71 on Tuesday and McCulloch had an 82.

Freshman Peyton Austin tied for 61st at 225 after a final-round 76.

Individual player T.J. Engelbart tied for 68th with 228. His final round was 75 on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons are next in action on Sept. 24 and 25 at the Missouri Southern Fall Classic in Monkey Island, Oklahoma.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler volleyball team disposed of two opponents Tuesday night. First, the Crusaders downed Winfield 25-9 in back-to-back sets. The Crusaders then got past El Dorado in three sets 25-18, 23-15 and 25-12.

Faith Kretzer led the way with 18 kills on the evening. Maggie McLean had four aces in the match against Winfield.

The Crusaders are now 9-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. They return to action on Tuesday when they host Circle and Andale.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Trinity Catholic tennis team had another solid performance and finished second at the Ellinwood Invitational.

Caeli Clennan and Maggie Vinduska both finished first in number one and two singles. Hannah Khokhar and Lexi Flores finished second in number two doubles.

 

 

The Celtics are back in action next Tuesday at the Hesston Invitational.
