City of Hutchinson has new human relations officer, planning director

HUTCHINSON – The City of Hutchinson has filled two vacant positions.

City Manager John Deardoff announced today Datjaeda Moore has been selected as the city’s new human relations officer. Under the supervision of the city manager, Moore will be responsible for administering the Human Relations Ordinance pertaining to anti-discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations in cooperation with the Human Relations Commission.

Moore comes to the city with more than 10 years of professional experience in communications, community relations and human resources, most recently as director of human resources at Kansas Neurological Institute. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Colorado and expects to complete her master’s degree in human resource management through Capella University later this year.

Hvitlok

The city also has a new planning director. Expected to start in May, Ryan Hvitlok comes to the city with more than 10 years of municipal and regional planning experience, most recently as city planner for Fergus Falls, Minn. He holds a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Minnesota State University, as well as bachelor’s degrees in political science and sociology from Winthrop University.

Hvitlok is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, American Planning Association and is Community Emergency Response Team Certified.

Oxford houses recognize Reno County Correctional Facility program

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Oxford Houses of Reno County presented the Reno County Sheriff’s Department and the Reno County Correctional Facility with a crystal plaque thanking them for the many services the facility provides for those wanting to beat drug addiction.

The sheriff’s office relationship with the Oxford houses began shortly after the facility opened. Both entities realized that a lot of the offenders who suffered from addiction wanted to change their lives, but did not have a safe place to go after their release.

Many members of Oxford have come into the facility for the department’s quarterly presentation of people in recovery who have changed their lives. Some of the programs help with financial planning and managing debt. Other programs help with life skills and anger management or help participants obtain a GED.

Under the GED program, 20 inmates have graduated. The facility currently has nine programs in place to help inmates turn their lives around.

Davies to step down as Fox executive director

HUTCHINSON — Significant personnel changes are coming to the Hutchinson Fox Theatre. Executive Director Josh Davies announced Tuesday he is stepping down from his position as soon as a replacement can be found.

Davies says he will stay on as technical director, a position he held for 15 years before assuming both roles about five years ago. Davies went before the theater’s board of directors requesting the change.

Davies said holding two positions was taking a toll on him and his family, and he wanted to return to a more “behind the scenes” role. Davies said it was a tough decision to make.

A search committee has been formed and the theater hopes to have a new executive director in place in the next month or so. Davies said once that position has been filled, the job of development director currently held by Mitch Hixson will be eliminated.

City budget retreat Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will take the first step in putting together the 2020 budget on Tuesday.

The council will hold its annual retreat at the city R.O. plant starting at 8 a.m.

The meeting is held each year so the council can decide what its priorities are for the next budget year.

The city has struggled to keep services at a high level while keeping taxes in check at the same time. The city is also working to get the police force back up to full staffing levels and continues to deal with infrastructure needs.

The city will work on the budget throughout the summer months. It is usually in place by the end of August for final approval.

Special hearing for Equus Beds water use set for Tuesday

COLWICH, Kan. — A special hearing gets underway tomorrow involving the Equus Beds Groundwater Management District and the city of Wichita.

The hearing comes after the Groundwater Management District rejected a proposal from the city of Wichita to draw water directly from sources instead of injecting it into the aquifer first. The action came during the annual meeting.

The hearing before the Kansas Division of Water Resources in Colwich will also include chances for the public to speak. Tim Boese, manager of the Equus Beds GMD, says the proposal simply goes against policies with the state of Kansas and really comes down to keeping better control of how the city takes water from the system.

The hearing is being held at ICM Ethanol in Colwich.

Vincennes wins national title 87-77 over Ranger

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Vincennes has won the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament. The Trailblazers jumped out to a 22-point lead then held on through foul trouble to score an 87-77 victory over Ranger College.

Vincennes jumped out to a big lead and held a 50-34 advantage at the half. But Ranger turned up the defensive heat and the Vincennes inside game went into a drought. That allowed the Rangers to close within two points with about five minutes to play. But the Blazers were able to get just enough free throws and defensive stops down the stretch to put the game away.

Kevin Osawe led four Vincennes players in double figures with 22 points. Keith Clemons added 17 more. Vincennes shot a scorching 65 percent from the field in the first half and 52 percent for the game.

The Rangers were led by Johnathon Jackson with 21 points. Star guard Brayan Au scored 12 points all in the second half and did not collect a basket until there were less than 12 minutes left in the game. Ranger ends the season at 31-4.

Vincennes knocks off defending champions to get shot at the title

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Normally the semi-finals are some of the best games of the NJCAA Tournament. But Friday was an exception. Shortly after Ranger soundly defeated Coffeyville in one semi-final, Vincennes punched their ticket to the finals with a 85-67 route of defending champion South Plains.

The Blazers go tout quickly and used their inside game to  stretch out a seven point halftime lead to as many as 20. South Plains never challenged in the second half. SPC was led by the big man inside, Caige Prim who scored 29 points but spent a large part of the second half in foul trouble. Chris Orlina was the only other player in double figures with 14. Vincennes place four players in double figures led by Kevin Osawe with 22 points. Keith Clemons added 19.

Vincennes will play Ranger for the national championship Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KWBW Radio AM 1450 and FM 98.5 and Country 102.9, starting with the pregame around 1:45.

Vincennes turns up defensive heat and inside game for decisive win over Odessa

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —There have been quite a few games in this years NJCAA National Tournament where one team jumps out to a good lead quickly only to see it whither away. That was not the case for Vincennes who jumped out to a 19 point half time lead and went on to a 72-60 win over Odessa in a game that was never really that close.

The Blazers used a stifling defense and a strong inside game to put Odessa in a hole very early. The Wranglers did start the second half on an 11-0 run and got the lead down to eight points but that was as close as it got.  Vincennes when on an 6-0 run to keep Odessa at bay for the rest of the game.

Keith Celmons led the way for the Blazers with 17 points. Craig Potter added 11 and Lony Francis Jr. collected 10. Neither  team shot the ball well as the Blazers shot just 39 percent, but Odessa was just 22-69 from the field for 32 percent. The Wranglers were led by Jaylen Hawkins who was the only player in double figures with 12 points. Vincennes will play South Plains at 7 p.m.

Coffeyville stuns Florida Southwestern in overtime

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Coffeyville Red Ravens are on the way to the semi-finals of the NJCAA National Tournament after a heart stopping 67-66 win over Florida Southwestern in overtime.

The game was back and forth through out as Coffeyville used a deep bench a relentless defense to keep FSW in check while the Buccaneers their size advantage to slow down the Ravens. The Ravens had a chance to win it in regulation but could not convert. In overtime the Bucs were down one with 14 seconds to play but missed

Neither team was spectacular on offense as both struggled from the field and from the free throw line. The Ravens shot just 33 percent from the field and just 42 percent from the line. FSW was just 34 percent from the field and 59 percent from the line. Coffeyville was led by Keon Queen who scored 16 points and Marvin Johnson who added another 13. The Bucs were led by Destin Barnes with 16, Mason Daniels, and DeShawn Thomas both added 12.

The Bucs end the year at 30-4.

South Plains staves off big comeback to defeat Eastern Florida State

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — South Plains raced out to an 18-point lead in the second half, then had to hang on for an 82-74 win over Eastern Florida State.

South Plains moves on to the semifinals where they will play at 7 p.m. Friday. EFSU ends the year at 28-8.

South Plains jumped on EFSU early and often, building a 16-point halftime lead. But Eastern Florida was able to cut through the South Plains defense and got the lead down to 3 late before free throws and a strong inside game for South Plains secured the win.

South Plains was led by Chris Orlina, who scored a game-high 23 points. Deon Barnett added another 19. Eastern Florida was led by Jalen Warren with 21. Junior Madut, Ayo Dada and Jonathon Ned all chipped in 11. South Planes outrebounded EFSU 37-26 and collected 26 defensive rebounds as their inside game dominated at times.
