Ranger College knocks off number one Northwest Florida State

HUTCHINSON – Brayan Au’s three pointer with 39 seconds to play propelled Ranger College to a 66-63 win over No. 1 Northwest Florida State.

Ranger moves on to the semifinals tomorrow night. NWFS ends the season at 28-5. The Raiders led by seven points with less that seven minutes to play, but Ranger stormed back to take the lead with two minutes to play. With the game tied at 59, Au hit from the left wing to put Ranger ahead for good. NWFS had a chance to tie the game at the end, but Chris Duarte’s three pointer missed at the buzzer.

Ranger was led in scoring by Jaren English with 24 points and Coryon Mason with 20. The Rangers Play either Coffeyville or Florida Southwester State in the semifinals.

NWFS was led by Duarte with 13 points. Tyrie Jackson, Javion Hamlet and Trey Diggs each scored 11. NWFS shot just 33 percent from the field and, despite a sizable height advantage, only managed seven more rebounds than Ranger.

Odessa moves on with win over Pearl River

HUTCHINSON, Kan. Odessa became the last team to make its debut in the NJCAA National tournament late Wednesday night. It almost became a little more than they bargained for. 

Pearl River put took advantage of some sloppy play in the second half by Odessa and cut into a large lead before the Wranglers survived a 69-61 contest. Anthony Johnson and Jawaun Daniels scored 13 points each to lead the way with Jaylen Hawkins added 10. Odessa got out quickly and led by 15 at the half. But Pearl River turned up the defense and got to within 6 with less that 2 minutes to play.

The Wildcats were led by Lagarious White with 17 points and Brandon Rachel with 15. After shooting a dismal 31 percent in the first half Pearl River came alive shooting 56 percent in the final 20 minutes to make the game close.  The wildcats end the season at 26-4.

Odessa will play Vincennes tomorrow evening at 6:30.

Vincennes races into the elite eight with win over Greyhounds

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Vincennes scored five players in double figures and collected a tournament high 58 rebounds on the way to eliminating Moberly Area College by a score of 81-74.

Vincennnes led pretty much throughout but got behind with about 7 minutes to play. But some defensive stops and a couple of big offensive plays got them back in front and free throws down the stretch iced the win. The Blazers balanced attack was led by Kevin Osawa and Lony Francis with 17 points each. Craig Porter collected 12 points, Colton Sandage added 11 and Kevin Kangu put in another 10.

The effort offset Alonzo Verge’s night for the Greyhounds. The sophomore poured in a tournament high 34 points but it took 13 of 31 shooting to get there. Sean Miller-More had another solid game with 15. The Blazers out rebounded the Hounds 52-39 and shot a tidy 43 percent from the floor. Vincennes moves on to play either Odessa or Pearl River Thursday night.

The season ends for the Greyhounds at 28-7.

American Legion presented SportsTravel Award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It was late last year when Visit Hutch announced that the 2018 NJCAA DI Men’s Basketball Championship had won the SportsTravel Award for the Best Single-Sport Event in the collegiate division.

The award was presented at the SportsTravel Awards Ceremony at the national TEAMS Conference put on by Northstar Travel Group. During the NJCAA National Tournament on Tuesday, LeAnn Cox with Visit Hutch presented all of the veterans and volunteers from the American Legion the award. The American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion have been a major part of the tournament for many years and use the event to raise money for veterans programs and youth activities.

Other events nominated in the single-sport event category were the Big Ten Football Championship in Indianapolis; the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship in Orange Beach, Alabama; the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California; and the Tucson Invitational Games in Tucson, Arizona.

Florida Southwestern opens tournament play with win against Indian Hills

HUTCHINSON — Florida Southwestern State took advantage of a cold spell by a determined Indian Hills team, then withstood a late rally to send the Warriors home from the national tournament. The final score was 77-71.

Indian Hills shot just 31 percent in the game and was outrebounded 48-37. FSWS put four players in double figures, led by Charles Manning Jr. with 22 points. Maddox Daniels scored 16, and Jalen French added another 15. FSW shot 44 percent for the game.

Tyon Grant-Foster led the way for Indian Hills with a game-high 25 points. Torrey Patton put in 18, but no other Warrior was in double figures. Indian Hills ends the season at 27-7. FSWS goes on to play Coffeyville Thursday evening.

Coffeyville gets past tough Kaskaskia team to move on to final eight

HUTCHINSON — Coffeyville led throughout Wednesday’s game but had to survive a few tense moments at the end to get past Kaskaskia 76-73.

Kaskaskia had a chance to tie the game twice in the final 20 seconds but an unforced turnover and a three-pointer that spun out at the buzzer denied the Blue Devils. The Ravens move on to play either Florida Southwestern or Indian Hills on Thursday.

Coffeyville was led by Tevin Brewer with 15 points, and Casey Benton and Keon Queen each added 13. Marvin Johnson and Immanuel Crump each scored 10. Kaskaskia was led by Parker Dortch with 24 and Thomas Bell with 22.

The Blue Devils end the season at 24-11.

Flooding in Nebraska causing increased train traffic in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you think you’ve been seeing more trains through the area, you are correct.

Due to flooding in Nebraska, both Union Pacific and BNSF have started to reroute trains through other divisions including Hutchinson. BNSF’s Andy Williams said they are taking trains both north and south of Nebraska, which include a large number of long coal trains.

He could not give an estimate of how many more trains will move through the area or how long the changes will last. The last time such an event happened, train traffic went from about six BNSF trains per day to more than 20 and lasted an entire summer.

A spokesperson for Union Pacific said the company can’t pinpoint how much train traffic will increase, only that it is working to get trains moving out of the flooded areas as quickly as possible. UP currently runs between 20 and 25 trains per day through Reno County.

Motorist can expect longer and slower-moving trains through the area. Amtrak passengers can also expect later train arrivals due to the extra congestion.

Nickerson Elementary School wins Challenge Award

NICKERSON — Nickerson Elementary School has been awarded The Challenge Award by Kansas State Department of Education for achievement in reading and math.

The award recognized the school for outstanding achievement and accomplishment based on Kansas Assessment results, the sample size, and the socioeconomic status of those taking the test.

The Challenge Awards are designed to recognize Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in their school population. For elementary schools, 75 percent of the criteria is weighted on reading and math achievement.

The award will be presented on Tuesday, April 9, at 7:55 a.m. at Nickerson Elementary School by Ben Jones, Kansas State Board of Education member.

EFSU eliminates Seward County from tournament

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Eastern Florida State has made a number of deep runs into the NJCAA National Tournament the past few years. But Region VI champion Seward County took the Titans to the brink before Eastern churned out a 67-59 win.

The Titans led by 12 at the break, but Seward used a full-court trap defense to claw back into the game. The Saints had several chances to pull ahead in the final three minutes, but two turnovers on offensive fouls proved too much to overcome.

EFSU was led by Nate Jackson, who scored 14 points. Jonathon Ned added 12 and Nick Stampley scored 11. Seward was led by Isiah Small’s 24 points and Devin Bethely, who scored 13. Star guard Marco Morency was held to just 9 points on 3-of-10 shooting. The Saints were also out-rebounded by a 35 to 19 margin. Seward ends the season at 28-6.

EFSU takes on South Plains on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Texans endure tough test from Trinity Valley

HUTCHINSON, KAN. — No. 2 seed South Plains let a good lead get away before slipping past Trinity Valley in the second round of the NJCAA National Tournament 82-75.

Trey Wade and Gaige Prim both powered the Texan’s offense with 22 points each. Deon Barrett added another 15. South Plains moves on to Thursday’s game at 2 p.m.

The Cardinals were led by Tyson Jolly, who led all scorers with 24 points, as their season ends at 28-8. The Cardinals had chances throughout the game with several small leads. In the end, South Plains’ offense seized control. The Cards shot just 37 percent in the game, but were a nice 13 of 13 from the foul line.

Trinity Valley also won the rebounding battle 39-34, but lost the overall contest.
