AUDIO: Dragons dominate Grizzlies

EL DORADO, Kan. — The No. 7 Hutchinson Blue Dragons (5-1, 3-0) defeated the No. 12 Butler Grizzlies 27-13 Saturday night.

The first quarter was a draw, neither team was able to score.

Hutchinson’s Dezmon Jackson drew first blood with a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Leroy Watson IV scored his first TD of the season when he hauled in a 24-yard strike from Mason Schucker with 9:37 left in the first half.

Sebastian Garcia drilled a 30-yard field goal to give the Dragons a 17-0 lead headed into intermission.

The Dragons extended that lead to 24 in the third quarter when Mason Schucker hit Khalil McClain from 37 yards out with only 1:04 remaining.

Sebastian Garcia hit another field goal, this time from 34 yards out, to finish Hutchinson’s scoring with 4:13 left to play.

The Grizzlies finally scored their first touchdown of the game when Trae Self hit Jovon Baldwin on a 70-yard bomb. The extra-point attempt was blocked to leave the score at 27-6.

Butler’s Darius Timmons scored on a short push at the goal line to bring the Grizzlies within 14.

However, the damage had already been done.

FINAL: Hutchinson 27 Butler 13

It is just the second win for Hutchinson against Butler since 1997.

It is Rion Rhoades’ first head-to-head victory against Butler’s Tim Schaffner in four tries.

Hutchinson’s defense held Butler to 1 of 15 on third down.

Butler led the league in time of possession headed into Saturday’s matchup, but Hutchinson allowed the Grizzlies to keep the ball for just over 23 minutes — 10 minutes and 16 seconds less than the Grizzlies averaged entering the game.

While he was pleased with the outcome, coach Rhoades knows the Dragons didn’t capitalize on every opportunity:

The Blue Dragons play a hot Highland Scotties (4-1) team at home on Oct. 6. Kickoff is set for noon.

Salthawks succumb to Railers

NEWTON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks were defeated by the Newton Railers 42-35 Friday night.

The teams were tied after one quarter.

Hutchinson gained the lead in the second quarter by putting up 21 points to Newton’s 7.

However, the Railers took control in the second half by scoring 21 points of their own, whilst keeping the Salthawks scoreless.

Coach Vernon said he and his team were caught off guard in the second half:

The Hutchinson Salthawks return to Gowans Stadium to play the Derby Panthers next Friday, Oct. 5.

Cougars conquer Bulldogs

Central Christian’s Garrett Burns runs for his third touchdown of the game. Burns is a junior running back for the Cougars.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Central Christian Cougars (3-2) beat the Pretty Prairie Bulldogs (2-3) 52-0 Friday night.

The Cougars first touchdown was scored by Garrett Burns less than four minutes into the contest.

Bailey Nachtigal scored the second touchdown for the Cougars with 8:25 left in the first quarter. The ensuing two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

The Cougars final touchdown in the first quarter was scored by Marshall Walton. The two-point conversion put Central Christian up 22-0.

Central Christian’s Garrett Burns scored his second touchdown of the game six minutes into the second quarter.

A complete pass from Caleb Lambert to Garrett Burns led to the Cougars fifth touchdown.

The sixth touchdown was scored by Dawson Urwiller with 4:31 left in the quarter.

Marshall Walton scored the final touchdown for the Cougars to make the final score 52-0. The game was decided by 45-point rule at halftime.
