Frances Garnetta Henderson-Ewertz, 99, of Hutchinson, died October 7, 2019, at Hutchinson Health and Rehab. She was born February 24, 1920, in Haven, to McCellan and Ella Edna (Prene) Harris, Sr.

Frances graduated from Haven High School in 1938. She worked for Underground Vaults and Storage, Collingwood Grain, and Long’s of Hutchinson as a sales clerk. Frances enjoyed sewing, making quilts, visiting with her customers, and playing her handheld electronic Poker game. She was loving, giving, and nurturing. Her two grandsons held a special place in her heart, and Frances enjoyed being involved in their lives. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On November 30, 1941, Frances married Harold Henderson in Haven. He died May 24, 1984. On January 23, 1993, she married Sylvester ‘Bud’ Ewertz in Hutchinson. He died April 25, 2003.

Frances is survived by: daughter, Pam Thompson of Herington; grandsons, Seth Stramel of Denver, CO, Ramsey Stramel of Mineola, TX; and brothers, Gene Harris and wife Agnes of Haven and Norval Harris and wife Dallas of Norwich.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Clifford, Merle, Mac, Lloyd, Wayne; sisters, Emma Carmichael, Carmelita Wilson, Zelpha Koch; and son-in-law, Shawn Thompson.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, 101 E. 1st, Hutchinson, with Pastor Mic McGuire officiating. Private family burial will take place in Sego Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Eleanor M. Baird, 93, of Hutchinson, died October 7, 2019, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. She was born April 2, 1926, to Russell and Louise (Henery) Baird, in Hutchinson.

Eleanor graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. She was retired from Prudential Insurance Company, where she worked for many years as a secretary.

Eleanor was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church, in Hutchinson. She belonged to the United Methodist Women, Duo Sunday School, and was a long-time member of the Lion’s Club.

Eleanor is survived by: three nieces; four nephews; two cousins; and dear friend, Pearl Tedford of Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Margaret; and brother, Richard.

Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2019, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, with The Rev. Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Private burial will follow. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

William Joseph ‘Joe’ Wakefield, 55, died October 7, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born December 23, 1963, in Hutchinson, the son of Donald F. and Edith M. (Jackson) Wakefield.  Joe graduated from Buhler high school in 1982 and from Central Kansas Area Vo-tech. He worked as a welding supervisor at Deluxe Tank and then for the last 10 years as the mechanic at the Kansas State Fair. Joe loved racing and fishing. He was a member of CrossPoint Church, Hutchinson.

On May 12, 2012, Joe married Jacquelyn ‘Jackie’ Lawrence in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are: children, Carmen Wille (Clint), Nickerson, Codey Wakefield, Hutchinson, Amanda Trammel, Hutchinson; grandchildren, Lillian, Simon, and Hannah Wille, Jonathan Trammel; mother, Edith Wakefield, Hutchinson; brother, David Wakefield, Hutchinson; father and mother-in-law, George and Alta Lawrence, Hutchinson; and his ‘favorite child’, Donatello, a Blue Heeler mix who was his constant companion.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Donald.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Matt Atherton officiating. Friends may sign the memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday thru Friday, with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, at Elliott Mortuary.

Wayne Leo ‘Red’ Alpers, 91, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, October 6, 2019, surrounded by his family, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born June 1, 1928, on the family farm, rural Hudson, to Elmer Leo and Laura Matilda (Hullman) Alpers.

Wayne attended German Valley Grade School, and graduated from Hudson High School in 1947. He served in the Kansas National Guard and then joined the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. Wayne was a farmer and stockman. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and member of the Great Bend American Legion Post #180. Wayne enjoyed reading, and after moving to Hutchinson visiting the family farm. He was a member of Peace Church, Hudson, (formerly Peace United Church of Christ).

On August 12, 1964, he married Lula Mae Irion in Grand Island, NE. She died October 15, 2013, after sharing 49 years of marriage. Their five grandchildren were their pride and joy. They attended their school and community events whenever they could.

Wayne is survived by: daughter, Sonja Reiser and husband Dennis of Hutchinson; son, Aaron Alpers and wife Jill of Wichita; grandchildren, Allison Westbrook and husband Bryant of Wichita; Kimberly Reiser of Hutchinson; Nathan, Austin, and Shayla Alpers of Wichita; sisters, Florene Kallaus of Fallbrook, CA, Phyllis Miller of Ellinwood; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lester of Wailuku, HI, Pat Conner of Lawrence, Esther Irion of Buffalo, OK; and his ‘best buddy’, Ron Simmons of Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, The Reverend Robert N. Alpers; and brothers-in-law, Roland C. Kallaus, George Miller, Jr., and Charles Irion.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Peace Church, 492 NE 140th Street, Hudson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Tammie Sue Ehrlich, 58, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, October 6, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born July 19, 1961, in Hutchinson, to Roy (Bud) and Wanda (Hibler) Killian.

She was a 1979 graduate of Hutchinson High School and 2015 graduate of Hutchinson Community College. Tammie had been a quality control technician for Kansas Protein Foods for over 21 years.

Her favorite pastimes were reading and spending time with family and her pets. Tammie was also a longtime avid Bunco player.

Survivors include: children, Sam of Hutchinson, Ben and wife Becky of Oklahoma City, OK, and Tiffany Ehrlich of Hutchinson; parents, Roy and Wanda Killian of Hutchinson; siblings, Robert Killian of Dallas, TX, and Lisa Bohlen of Hutchinson; two grandchildren, Michael and Alison Ehrlich; and niece, Kaley Bohlen of Wichita.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Simon Ehrlich.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with The Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery. The casket will remain closed. Her memorial book will be available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.

Richard E. Sadowski, of Newton, passed away October 5, 2019. He was born on December 30, 1926 to Henry Jacob and Katie (Lingnau) Sadowski. Along with his brothers (Clayton, Allen, Tom, Gerald, and Theodore) and sister (Rita). Richard spent his younger years on a farm in Newton. He attended Newton schools and was active in sports, hunting, and fishing.

Richard married Shirley (Holmes) in 1948. The two raised two sons (Larry and Michael), and enjoyed sixty-four years of marriage together until Shirley’s passing in 2012. The two share five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Best-known as a kindhearted man, Richard was active in committees in the community; he once stated, “I want to still serve on committees when I reach ninety.” Richard was a charter member at Trinity Heights UMC, where he served in the church as: Trustee, Church Council; counted Sunday school collection. He also went on eight mission trips throughout areas in Haiti, West Samoa, and Guatemala.

Survivors include his sons, Larry Sadowski and wife, Anita, and Michael Sadowski and wife, Julie; five grandchildren: Laura Sadowski, Paul (Lindsey) Sadowski, Katie (Ty) Barnett, Jaden Sadowski and Holly Sadowski; four great-grandchildren. Brother, Clayton (Rita) of Newton; sister Rita of Cheek Modesto, CA; brother, Allen (Rita) of Grantsville, KS; brother Tom (Peggy) of Newton.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brothers, Gerald and Theodore Sadowski.

Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Trinity Heights UMC (Newton, Kansas). There will be no graveside service.
