Marilyn A. Fesler | 1935 – 2019 |

Marilyn Ann Fesler, 84, died November 12, 2019, at Waldron Place, Hutchinson. She was born March 6, 1935, in Great Bend, the daughter of August and Clara (Hullman) Sittner.

Marilyn graduated from Hudson High School in 1953, Hutchinson Community College in 1955, and received her bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University in 1957.  She was a business teacher at Sylvia and Pretty Prairie High Schools and substitute business teacher at Fairfield High School. Marilyn was active in Plevna Community Bible Church and Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church.

On July 20, 1958, she married Melvin F. Fesler in Hudson. He died November 24, 2003.

Marilyn is survived by: daughters, Kathy Dick (Dayul), Hutchinson, Kris Murphy (Justin), Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Dustin Dick (Amanda), Buhler, Devin Dick, Burrton, Kaley Dick, Fayetteville, AR, Alec Murphy (Jessica), Peoria, IL, Spencer Murphy, Knoxville, TN, Shanae Schmucker, Hutchinson, Clay Schmucker, Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, McKenna, Hollie, and Logan Dick, Hudson and Avy Murphy; brother, Marvin Sittner, Hudson; sister-in-law, Glenda Sittner, Hudson; and son-in-law, Kelly Schmucker (Cindy), Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Karen Schmucker; brother, Larry Sittner; and sister-in-law, Arlene Sittner.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2019, at Abbyville Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church, 415 N. West St., with Pastors Dustin Dick and Curt Vogt officiating. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church Youth Group, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Beverly Ann Harding | 1939 – 2019 |

Beverly Ann Harding, 80, died November 7, 2019, at Newton Medical Center. She was born January 27, 1939, in Manter, the daughter of Albert E. and Reno M. (Cramer) Nusser.

Beverly graduated from high school in Cabool, MO, and worked as a machinist at Collins Industries in South Hutchinson for many years. She loved cooking, leatherwork, sewing, and reading.

Beverly is survived by: daughter, Shirley (Dwight) Ryan; sons, Daryl Johnson, Lonnie (Diane) Johnson, Bob (Sharon) Johnson, Steven Johnson, all of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Doris Messenger, Hood River, OR; and brother, Harold (Millie) Nusser, Holton.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Frances; brothers, Gerald and Dale.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Beverly’s life will be held from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Sand Hills Event Center, 4601 N. Plum Street, Hutchinson. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the Beverly Harding Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

“Midway” may be the worst movie I recommend you see this year if you go to the theater for stimulating thoughts, deep plots, great acting, spectacular production, entertainment substance or humor. You’ll find none of those in this World War II feature about one of the War’s most important, tide turning battles in the South Pacific.

What you will find is a dramatic close up of what human aerial combat used to be, the unbelievable bravery and heroism of pilots and others who fought those battles. Although with specific effects lacking in modern standards, but effective enough to help tell an amazing story that many in today’s generation have never been told, while others may have forgotten. Midway is also a perfect movie to see during Veterans week that helps drive home why the “greatest generation” is called just that. Midway did a surprising 20 million dollars in ticket sales last weekend which was enough to lead all opening films, several of which were deeply disappointing.

What “Midway” lacks in star power, depth and production, it generates in historical perspective by telling a story that should never be forgotten.

For the coming weekend, several studios are on edge hopeful that an adult auto racing film that presents a biographical sports drama will attract enough customers to justify its’ nearly 100 million dollar budget. The movie is “Ford v Ferrari,” and it carries an impressive 92 percent “want to see” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Ford v Ferrari” stars two Academy Award winners, Matt Damon and Christian Bale. It takes us back to 1965 and the founding of the Le Mans, France auto race. The focus is how an American auto designer and British race car driver worked to build a revolutionary car for Ford Mt. Company. It’s a risky film to produce based on its’ large budget and what happens will be interesting to watch. You can see it locally, along with “Midway,” at Hutchinson’s B&B Theatre.

LaVona D. Schmitt | 1936 – 2019 |

LaVona Darlene Schmitt, 83, died November 10, 2019, at Andover Court.  She was born March 26, 1936, in Nickerson, to Lloyd Coffey and Julia Zella (Hedrick) Southards.

LaVona graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1954.  She was a homemaker, worked at Hutchinson National Bank, and was treasurer of the Buhler School Board USD #313.  LaVona was a member of Sweet Adelines for almost 40 years.

She was married to LaVern Schmitt for 12 years.  He died September 23, 2018.

LaVona is survived by:  daughters, Pam Chamberlin (Mark Midkiff), of Wichita, Cindy Chase (Kevin) of Derby; brother, Jay Coffey (Dixie) of Independence; sister, Phyllis Scarlett (Rene) of Wichita; grandchildren, Kyler Chase (Brianna Regan), Brayden Chase (Kyla), Jantzen Chase (Chelsea), Alex Chase (Josh Smith), Addie Chase, Courtney Iqbal, Brittney Cuer (James), Kimberly  Foland (Josh); and great-grandchildren, Zara and Zain Iqbal, and Hunter and Hudson Cuer.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 15, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with Dr. J. Tal Tittsworth officiating.  Burial will follow in Wildmead Cemetery, Nickerson.  Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.  Memorials may be made to Hutchinson Sweet Adelines, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.
