Samuel D. ‘Sam’ Nisly, 90, died May 29, 2019, at his home. He was born October 18, 1929, in Hutchinson, the son of Daniel M. and Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ (Borntrager) Nisly. Sam was a co-founder of Prairie Construction. He was very involved in prison ministry, serving as an M2 sponsor with Offender/Victim Ministries.

Sam was a member at Center Amish Mennonite Church, Hutchinson. He was also a member of Gideons International, sang with the Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus and Reno Choral Society, and in his later years volunteered with Hands of Christ Ministries.

On May 22, 1955, Sam married Esther Pauline Nisly in Partridge. They shared 64 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: children, Sheryl Nisly-Nagele (Ken), Monticello, IL; Jana Nisly, El Salvador; Melody Nisly, Abbyville; Arlyn Nisly (Brenda), Partridge; Wendell Nisly (Jeanene) Harrisonburg, VA; brother, Harvey Nisly, Hutchinson; sister, Anna Coblentz, Lamar, MO; grandchildren, Elizabeth Ross (Tyler), Daniel and Douglas Nisly-Nagele, Braden, Chalonna, Clarisa, and Jeriah Nisly; one great-grandchild on the way; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Roman, Perry, Mahlon; sisters, Fannie Helmuth, Clara, Barbara, and Mandy Nisly.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2019, at Center Amish Mennonite Church, 7213 W. Mills Ave., with Pastors Gary Miller, Paul W. Nisly, and David Yoder officiating. Burial will follow in West Center Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2019, at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Gideons International, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Ronald E. Caley, 71, died May 28, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born September 10, 1947, in Hutchinson, to Wilbur Ward and Norma Jean (Wilson) Caley.

Ronald graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1965.  He served in the United States Army, during the Vietnam War, from 1967 to 1968, receiving two Purple Hearts.  Ronald worked at Sonoco, retiring as a maintenance electrician with over 30 years of service.  He was ornery, stubborn, and loved to ride his Harley-Davidsons.   Ron enjoyed Tootsie Pops, puzzles, and  spoiling his grandchildren. He was of the Catholic faith.

On August 30, 1978, he married Linda Curtis in Deadwood, South Dakota.

Ronald is survived by: his wife of almost 41 years, Linda; sons, Brian Caley and Brandon Caley, twin-sons, Shawn Caley, Shane Caley; siblings, Brenda Shive, Larry Caley, Judy Range; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2019, with Pastor Andy Addis officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.  Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ronald Caley Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.

Because of his love for Harley-Davidsons, Ronald requested that those in attendance to dress casual, and to wear Harley-Davidson attire, if possible.

Ernest ‘Ernie’ Peters, 79, formerly of Hutchinson, died May 27, 2019, at Kansas Veterans Home, Winfield. He was born March 11, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Claus K. and Martha (Klassen) Peters.

Ernie received his GED while in the United States Army. He later graduated from Hutchinson Community College. Ernie served in the United States Army for over 20 years, retiring as a First Sergeant. For two years, he served in the Color Guard at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Ernie later worked for the City of Hutchinson as Superintendent of the Water Department for 15 years. He was a lifelong bowler, and a former member of Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson.

On March 23, 1963, he married Alvina Frog in Fort Riley.

Ernie is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Alvina; daughter, Gayla Peters Rizzo, both of Goddard; son, Ernest Fredric Peters (Caroline) of Erie; grandsons, Jon Anthony Rizzo of Leavenworth, Andrew Patrick Rizzo of Wichita, twin grandsons, Trey Ernest and Jacob Daniel Peters, both of Erie; sister, Esther Postier of Hutchinson; brother, Abe Peters (Ellen) of Greensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Dr. J. Ted Blakley officiating. Burial will follow in North Inman Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.

Kevin Lee Meyer, 58, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at his home in Hutchinson, KS.

Kevin was born July 23, 1960 in Smith Center, KS, to Donald and LaVern (Lehmann) Meyer. He attended Gaylord Elementary School and Smith Center High School, graduating with the class of 1978. Following high school, he enrolled in carpentry classes at Beloit Vo-Tech and graduated in 1979. After graduation, Kevin used these carpentry skills in a variety of home-building and construction jobs. He worked for Nick Luiso for a number of years in the Kensington area. He also had many self-employment jobs. The last several years, Kevin was employed by Miller Home Builders in Hutchinson.

Kevin enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard on March 14, 1980 in the 170th Maintenance Company in Smith Center, Kansas under the split training program. This unit later became the 995th Maintenance Company. He enlisted as a 92G, Food Service Specialist and spent all of his 39 years in the Kansas Army National Guard working in that field obtaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. During his time with the 170th and 995th he was an instrumental part of winning two awards in the Phillip A. Connelly Awards Program for Excellence in Army Food Service. The first award in 1994 and the second in 2003. This award is a Department of the Army Award for all Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve Component units. As a guardsman, Kevin prepared thousands of meals for soldiers. Sergeant First Class Jones reported that it isn’t often that Soldiers would rather eat Army food than have meals catered, but that was the case wherever SFC Meyer was cooking. In October 2010, SFC Meyer was deployed to Kuwait with the 778 th Transportation Company in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Sargent Jones also said that Kevin was very proud of his community and would volunteer to assist with community events every chance that he had.

Kevin was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church, Athol, KS, and most recently a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, KS. Kevin had a life-time passion for sports. He enjoyed basketball, baseball, football, and car-racing events. He attended games at Smith Center High School, Hutchinson Community College, and Kansas State University, as well as games in Kansas City supporting the Royals and the Chiefs. Mother’s Day weekend, Kevin was able to go the NASCAR Kansas 400 race at the Speedway in Kansas City.

Kevin’s sense of humor was unrivaled especially at Christmas time. Family members had the benefit of his many creative Christmas presents. Many of these gifts showcased his woodworking skills.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Sheryl Meyer, and a nephew, Spencer Tuxhorn. Kevin is survived by his sisters, Kerri (Devon) Kuhlman and Monica Dunavan; nieces: Erica (Ryan) Ballard, Lakin (Taylor) Lyon, and Felicia Kuhlman; nephews: Derrick Kuhlman, Braden Kuhlman, Logan Tuxhorn, Caleb Kuhlman, and Austin Kuhlman; and three great nieces: Olivia Lyon, Ayva Nielsen, and Oaklynn Lyon.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E. 30th Avenue, Hutchinson, KS, with Pastor Tim Carey officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 31, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., with family present to greet friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Avenue, in Hutchinson. Burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Memorials may be given to the Emanuel Lutheran Church and sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Mark R. Bierly, 63, of Hutchinson, passed away May 22, 2019. He was born November 21, 1955, in Manhattan, to Robert and Charlene (Fawl) Bierly.

Mark graduated from Lyons High School and Kansas State University. He was a long-time machinist at Agco Corporation, Hesston.

On May 30, 1998, Mark married Heidi Kraus. She survives.

Also surviving are: parents, Robert and Charlene Bierly, Overbrook; brother, Kirk, Overbrook; sister, Lisa Steinert and husband Mike, Wakarusa; nieces, Maribeth Steinert and Geneva Kraus; nephew, Matthew Steinert; and brother-in-law, Dave Kraus.

Memorial services are planned in Hutchinson at a later date. Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, is in charge of arrangements.

Edna M. Temaat, 86, of Hutchinson, died May 27, 2019, at Wesley Towers Hester Care Center. She was born September 21, 1932, in Loretto, KS, the daughter of Sim and Sophie (Herman) Stremel.

A longtime Hutchinson resident, Edna was a 1950 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita and attended Dominican School of Nursing in Wichita. Following her schooling, she worked at the Wichita Hospital and the Dodge City Diocesan School office in Windthorst, KS. Edna and her husband, Tony, were the former owners of T & E Oil Company and currently owned the Temaat Business Center. She was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Holy Cross Altar Society, and both St. Rita and Little Flower Circles.

On August 18, 1956, she married Anthony ‘Tony’ Temaat in Windthorst, KS. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2015.
Edna is survived by: daughter, Jo Wooderson (Rick), Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jennifer (Wooderson) Truta (Brian), Overland Park, Ryan Wooderson (Cathy Hay), Denver, Colorado; one great-grandchild, Hayes Anthony Wooderson; and sister, Sister Cecilia Ann Stremel, Great Bend.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Tony; son, Greg; sister, Bernie Dome; and brother, Jim Stremel.

Parish Rosary will be 7 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2019, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Church of the Holy Cross, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
