Harold ‘Duane’ Childs, 88, died February 19, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.  He was born May 7, 1930, in Plevna, to William Denver ‘W.D.’ and Gladys Lucille (Smith) Childs.

Duane graduated from Plevna High School in 1948.  After graduating high school, he served in the Army National Guard from 1948-1957, working as a Sergeant First Class Assistant Battalion, Battery Supply Sergeant, and in the 161^st Service Battery Field Artillery.  Duane then worked as the manager for Farmers Co-Op Union Feed Store, Sterling.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, and his household pets.  Duane also volunteered as a Webelos leader and Cubmaster for the Sterling Boy Scouts. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson.

On December 20, 1952, he married Betty Carol Jennings in Sylvia.  They shared almost 65 years of marriage before her death on December 7, 2017.

Duane is survived by:  son, Kevin and wife Sharon of Hutchinson; daughter, Rhonda Carlson and husband Richard of Wichita; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren, with another great-granddaughter scheduled to arrive in May.

He was preceded in death by:  his parents; wife, Betty (Jennings) Childs; son, Randall Kent Childs; brothers, Chalmers, Robert ‘Bob’, Denver, and Donald Childs; and sisters, Thelma Childs and Rosalie Childs.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2019, at First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson, with Pastor Kent Pedersen officiating.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.  Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.  Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson, or Friends of Animals of Rice County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Steven L. ‘Steve’ Rice, 69, of Hutchinson, KS, passed away at home after a long struggle with cancer on February 19, 2019. He was born May 18, 1949, in Hutchinson, to C. Ray and M. Frances (Metcalf) Rice.

Steve was a lifelong resident of Reno County, residing in Nickerson and Hutchinson. He graduated from Nickerson High School in 1967 and attended Pittsburg State University. Steve worked for many years in outside sales for Gary’s Office Machines, Janitorial Supply, and Meschke’s of Hutchinson. He was a member of the Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson.

Steve is survived by: his wife, Marian (Voth) Rice; brother, Dennis Rice and wife Karen of Nickerson; son, Jason and wife Sara of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Ashley Howry and husband Steve of Kuna, ID; stepdaughters, Elizabeth Navarro and husband Marcio of Mulvane, and Rochelle Robinson of Hesston. The joys of his life included his nine grandchildren, Jacob and Logan Rice of San Antonio, TX, Lillian, Joey and Layla Howry of Kuna, ID, and Ian, Iasmin, Iona and Isaias Navarro of Mulvane. Steve is also survived by: nephews, Chad Rice and wife Brandi of Halstead, Britt Rice and wife Jesica of Hutchinson; and the mother of his children, Susan (Brumbaugh) Cole.

Steve delighted family and friends with his sense of humor. His grandchildren will greatly miss his attention and love.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 25, 2019, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th, Hutchinson, KS, with Wayne DeWindt officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, all at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory. Beverly Jane Williams, 91, of Hutchinson, died February 18, 2019, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. She was born June 12, 1927, in Iowa City, Iowa. Beverly graduated from Beeler High School in 1945 and attended Hutchinson Community College. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked as a sales clerk at Alco for 30 years. Beverly loved gardening, quilting, playing the guitar, and singing. She was a member of Mount Olivet Worship Center, Hutchinson.

On October 24, 1948, Beverly married B.C. Williams in Dighton. He died August 2, 1974.

Survivors include: daughters, Nancy Borger (Marlyn), of Colby, Jane Brown, Kathy Jones (Dan), Diana Zahn (Kerry), Sharon Wehry (Bob), all of Hutchinson; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by: her mother, Dorothy Fern (Slaughter) Edwards; son, Michael M. McBride, Sr.; and grandchildren, Adam and Ruby McBride.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2019, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Janet E. Boroughs, 64, died February 17, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born January 24, 1955, in Lindsborg, to the Rev. Robert B. ‘Bob’ and Maxine Leonora (Harris) Brooks.

Janet graduated from Abilene High School in 1973. She attended Tabor College and Kansas Wesleyan College and graduated with a double bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work. Janet was committed to devoting her life to helping others in both her job, organizations she belonged to, and her church. Janet was a social worker, working for SRS (now DCF, Department of Children and Family Services) in both the Lyons and Hutchinson area for 30 years. She was a member of Piecemakers Quilt Guild and the McPherson Gem and Mineral Club. Janet enjoyed deer hunting and was an accomplished pianist and seamstress. She had a passion for making quilts, completing hundreds of quilts for friends and family members. Janet’s greatest joy was being a grandma to her treasured granddaughter, Emma. They shared a special bond and loved spending every moment together. Janet was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lyons, since 1982.

On February 13, 1982, she married David Boroughs in Augusta. They shared 37 beautiful years of marriage.

Janet is survived by: husband, David; daughter, Elizabeth Peterson and husband Matthew; granddaughter, Emma Peterson, all of Lyons; father, the Reverend Robert B. ‘Bob’ Brooks of Hutchinson; brother, the Reverend Gary R. Brooks and wife Jeanne of Wichita; four brothers- and sisters-in laws; 12 beloved nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; and mother-in-law, Maxine Boroughs of Lyons.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Brooks and father-in-law, Z. E. Boroughs.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, February 22, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, Lyons, 101 S. Pioneer, with Pastor Kimberly Shank officiating. Burial will follow in Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. Viola A. ‘Vi’ Hoffman, 97, of Hutchinson, died Feb. 17, 2019, at Hospice House. She was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Lindsborg, the daughter of John & Johanna (Lorenzen) Johnson.

Vi was a 1939 graduate of Lindsborg High School and attended business college in Salina. She married Ed Hoffman Feb. 14, 1944, in Oakland, CA. Ed’s death occurred on Sept. 30, 2012. A long-time Hutchinson resident, she and Ed lived in Overland Park, Denver, CO, St. Louis, MO, Minneapolis, MN, and Dallas, TX. Vi volunteered as a church secretary and for the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Phi Beta Psi Sorority.

She is survived by: sons, Jim and wife Kay of Wichita, Ron and wife Joy of Pittsburg, MO; daughter, Connie Christensen of Seaside, OR; grandchildren, Teresa LaRose and husband Larry, Stephen Hoffman and wife Gloria, Shannon Rodriquez; grandson-in-law, Bill Garrison; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Ed; her parents; brothers, Liebert and Raynard Johnson; sister, Florence Toler; son-in-law, David Christensen; and a granddaughter, Debbie Garrison.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Mark H. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. James Russell ‘Jim’ Glass Jr., 74, of South Hutchinson, died February 15, 2019, at his home. He was born June 13, 1944, in Hutchinson, to James R. and Lois W. (Robertson) Glass.

Jim graduated from Nickerson High School in 1962, took some college drafting classes, went to real estate broker’s school, and completed trade apprenticeships in plumbing and electric. He worked for Cessna and in the architectural department at Dillons before going into business for himself as a home designer, builder, and general contractor. Jim designed and built about 300 houses and apartments around Reno county (including the Larry Doskocil home), designed house plans for Warren Schmidt and other local builders’ subdivisions, and was a draftsman for two architectural firms. He was a member of Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M. and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson.

On December 28, 1961, Jim married Catherine Ann McKee in Hutchinson. They divorced in 1978. In December 2000, he married Claudia J. Laird in Hutchinson. She survives.

Other survivors include: daughter, Debra Glass (Greg Frisbee), South Hutchinson; sons, John Glass (Wynnetta), South Hutchinson, Jeremy Glass, Wichita; granddaughters, Kayci Glass, Lynsi Aumiller (Dallas), Chelcee Stewart (Kyle), Madyson Glass; great-grandsons, Waylon, Silas, and Levi Frye, Landry Aumiller, Gauge Stewart; stepdaughter, Sarah Williams (Ryan), Wichita; stepson, James Broker (Katie), Hutchinson; step-grandsons, Dawson and Nolan Williams, step-granddaughter, Claire Williams; brother, Tom Glass, Hutchinson; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by: his parents; an infant brother and brother, Bill Glass; sister, Susan Johnson; and ex-wife, Cathy Voss.

Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson, with Father Juan Garza officiating. A reception will follow in Madonna Hall. Peggy Jean Wise, 78, of South Hutchinson, formerly of Council Grove, died February 15, 2019, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born September 6, 1940, in Danville, Illinois, to Ralph and Ruth (Shake) Payne.

Peggy worked as a homemaker and was a member of the Wilsey Christian Church, Wilsey, Kansas.

On August 5, 1977, she married Raymond Roy Wise in Kingman, Indiana. He died May 3, 2018.

Peggy is survived by: daughter, Margo Frey and husband Pastor John of Hutchinson; brothers, Donn Payne and wife Doris of Veedersburg, Indiana, Dann Payne and wife DonElla of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Kari Magana and husband Nick of Gardner, Matthew Fox and wife Brittany of Herrington, Mark Mock and wife Virginia of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Emma Magana, Elijah Magana, Ethaniel Magana, Israel Mock, Ezekiel Mock, one great-grandson on the way.

She was preceded in death by: father, Ralph Payne; mother, Ruth (Shake) DelValley; daughter, Melony Ramey Watkins; sister, Patsy Wise; and brother-in-law, Ernie Wise.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at Wilsey Christian Church, 310 Lyndon Street, Wilsey, Kansas, with Pastor Clarence Sumner and son-in-law, Pastor John Frey officiating.
