Arminda Pruner, 94, of Hutchinson, died February 14, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born July 25, 1924, in Nickerson, the daughter of Lorenzo and Agnes (Carpenter) Foster.
Arminda was a homemaker who loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was of the Christian faith.
On July 18, 1944, Arminda married Edward G. ‘Ed’ Pruner in Hutchinson. He died August 27, 2005. Survivors include: daughters, Marceille Mitchell (Jerry), Hutchinson, Linda Hammar, Moundridge, Robin Krieg (Bob), Hutchinson; son, Robbie Pruner, Bushton; grandchildren, Michael Mitchell (Denise), Michelle Mitchell, Jacob, Joshua, and Zachary Hammar, Dustin Whitford (Jody), Cameron Whitford, Timothy Blackburn (Lacey), Casey Blackburn; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, June Schleuling, Sterling, Carol Smith, Hutchinson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Pauline Foster and Pearl Starks.
Cremation has taken place. Inurnment of both Arminda’s and Ed’s cremains will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at Eastside Cemetery, 500 S. Cleveland, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, with family present from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to Interfaith Housing, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
Gary P. Nelson, 80, of Hutchinson, died February 13, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born July 2, 1938, in Wichita, to Paul Edgar and Bonnie Earldene (Murray) Nelson.
Gary graduated from Wichita East High School in 1956, Wichita State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, and KU with a Master’s in Psychiatric Social Work in 1964. He retired as Director of SRS (Social and Rehabilitation Services), now known as DCF (Department of Children and Family Services), after 40 years of service. Gary started his working career in Wichita, before moving to Winfield, and then Hutchinson in 1987. While in Hutchinson, Gary supervised a seven-county area. After retirement, Gary worked with Compassionate Ministries through First Church of the Nazarene for 11 years. Gary had a true passion for helping those in need. He was a member of the Hutchinson Gun Club, Kansas Conference on Social Welfare, National Association of Social Workers, and First Church of the Nazarene. Gary’s hobbies included collecting coins and old money.
On August 28, 1970, he married Joyce Kay Cornwell in Wichita. They shared 48 years of marriage. Gary is survived by: wife, Joyce of Hutchinson; brother, Dr. Dennis Nelson and wife Penny; cousin, Jan Murray; nephews, Clay Eric Hawes, David Cornwell, Brad Cornwell; nieces, Dr. Susan Molloy, Marilyn Bedigrew and husband Marvin; brother-in-law, George Weitgenant; brother- and sister-in-law, Charles Cornwell and wife Wanda; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Kathleen Weitgenant; grandparents; and aunts and uncles.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 North Monroe, Hutchinson, with Pastor Josh Moore and Dr. Mark Glover officiating. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. in Highland Cemetery, 425 Amos Becker Road, Winfield. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene (for the building fund), or Hospice House, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS, 67501.
Kathleen Garrett went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.
A committal service was held on February 13. A memorial service commemorating her life and devotion to God, family, and community will be 9 a.m. Friday, February 22, 2019, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 N. Monroe St., Hutchinson.
Memorials may be made to the Helping Hands Fund at Berean Baptist Church, 1620 Center St., Hutchinson, KS 67501 for Kathleen’s final expenses and other ministries.
COLBY, Kan. — Minus one starter and mired in deep, deep foul trouble through most of the second half, the Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team found a way to earn a Jayhawk West road win on Saturday at Colby.

Freshman Malique Jacobs scored a career-high 26 points and made several critical plays down the stretch to lead the Blue Dragons to a gritty 93-86 victory over the Trojans at the Colby Community Building.
Winners of three-straight games, the Blue Dragons improve to 22-6 overall and solidified their hold on third place in the Jayhawk West at 13-6 after a seasons sweep of Colby. The Trojans fall to 16-11 overall, 11-7 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson plays host to Barton on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.
A little more than 3 minutes into the game, the Blue Dragons lost starting forward Rheaquone Taylor for the rest of the game to an injury. Then the Dragons got into massive foul trouble. With 6 minutes to play in the game, Saquan Singleton, Tyler Brown and Chris Giles all had four fouls and James Rojas had three.
With 7:01 to play in the second half, the Blue Dragons trailed 71-69. The Blue Dragons were impressive from that point.
The Blue Dragons scored on seven-straight possessions down the stretch as Hutchinson outscored Colby 26-17 to erase that deficit. Jacobs had seven points, three assists and two steals to lead the Dragons in that final stretch. Rojas had six points and Brown had five, including a dagger 3-pointer that gave the Blue Dragon an 80-74 lead with 3:56 to go.
Over the final 7 minutes, the Blue Dragons were 9 of 10 shooting overall with the Brown 3-pointer and seven of eight from the free-throw line. Hutchinson dished out seven assists on those nine makes. Trailing 37-36 at halftime, Hutchinson outscored Colby 57-49 in the second half.
Jacobs’ career-high 26 points came on 10 of 18 shooting with a career-best seven assists and four steals.. Jacobs had 16 points in the second half to spark a 66-27 scoring advantage for Hutchinson off the bench.
Rojas finished with 23 points and eight rebounds. He was 7 of 11 shooting with a 3-pointer and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line. D.J. Mitchell had 15 points. Singleton and Giles had eight points each.
The Blue Dragons shot 52.5 percent overall (32 of 61), hitting 4 of 11 3-pointers and 25 of 36 from the free-throw line. The Dragons out-rebounded Colby 41-31.
Despite the foul trouble, no Blue Dragons fouled out of the game.
Hutchinson was outshot in the game. Colby shot 54.5 percent for the game (34 of 62). The Trojans were 5 of 18 from 3-point range and 13 of 27 from the free-throw line.
Rian Carter had 19 points to lead Colby. Eddie Davis had 18 and Craig Beaudoin had 16 points and five assists.
The game featured 13 lead changes and 11 ties. Colby’s largest lead was six at 2:29 to play in the first half after a 4-point play by Eric Turner. The Dragons fought back and got a Singleton tip-in with 38 seconds left to pull within 37-36 at halftime.
Colby led 47-42 after a Carter steal and dunk with 16:03 left. Hutchinson went on a 10-4 run and took a 52-51 lead on Rojas’ 3-pointer with 12:11 to go. Colby took a 69-67 lead with 7:01 left after a Javion May layup.
Tied at 71, the Blue Dragons took the lead for good on a Mitchell jumper and Jacobs layup for a 75-71 lead with 4:54 to play. Singleton’s fastbreak layup with 3:08 left upped the lead to eight at 84-76. Colby’s Turner countered with a 3-pointer, but two free throws and later a layup by Rojas boosted the lead to 90-81 with 30 seconds to play.

GAME NOTES – Hutchinson earned its 50th all-time win in 54 overall games with Colby. This was Blue Dragon all-time win 1,802. Rojas posted his ninth 20-point game this season. Hutchinson has shot 50 percent or better in six of the last eight games. The Dragons are 7-4 on the road this season when trailing at halftime and 3-4 when outshot by an opponent this season.

The Blue Dragons improve to 27-1 overall and stayed in a first-place tie with Seward County in league play at 18-1. Seward County rallied to defeat Barton 81-80 on Saturday. Hutchinson plays its final home regular-season game on Wednesday against Barton at 5:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.
Hutchinson reaches the 27 win mark ties for the eighth-most wins in program history, matching three other teams. The Blue Dragons increased their win streak over Colby to nine games.
Leading 26-24 with 3:37 left in the second quarter, the Blue Dragons closed the half on a 12-0 run to lead 37-24 at halftime. The Dragons extended that decisive run to 32-8 over the first 7:50 of the third quarter and led 58-30 with 2:10 to play after a Makayla Johnson inside bucket.
Leading 62-38 after three quarters, the Blue Dragons scored only two points over the first 5:11 of the fourth quarter as a 15-2 Colby run cut the Hutch lead to 64-53 after back-to-back 3-pointers from the Trojans’ Kiara Knight. Colby outscored the Blue Dragons 24-13 in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Milan Schimmel scored a conference-season high 17 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, to lead the Blue Dragons on Saturday. Schimmel added five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Making her first career start, Tijuana Kimbro posted a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. She also had two blocked shots.
Four players scored in double figures for Hutchinson. Makayla Vannett hit two 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and a team-high four assists. Johnson had 10 points and four rebounds. Dejanae Roebuck had nine points and Abby Ogle chipped in eight points, four assists and three steals.
The Blue Dragons shot 49.0 percent overall (25 of 51), hitting 4 of 13 from 3-point range and 21 of 28 from the free-throw line. The Dragons outrebounded Colby 40-25.
Colby was held to 36.4 percent shooting (20 of 55). The Trojans were 6 of 16 from 3-point range and 16 of 18 from the free-throw line.
Kaitlyn Guillory had 14 points to lead the Trojans. Sia Williams had 13, Jordan Dixon had 11 and Kiara Knight had 10 to lead Colby.
GAME NOTES – The 2018-19 Blue Dragons match and 2001-02, 2015-16 and 2017-18 teams with 27 wins, the eighth most in team history. The Blue Dragons are 49-14 all-time against Colby. This was all-time Blue Dragon win No. 970. Sophomore Dejanae Roebuck moved past Sherry Dishman into No. 12 on the career scoring list with 879 points. She moved past Kirea Rogers into fifth on the career rebound list with 525. Tijuana Kimbro is the fourth Blue Dragon to post a double-double this season. Hutch forced a season-low eight turnovers. The Dragons are 12-0 on the road this season. This was the 24th time Hutchinson’s defense held an opponent to less than 40 percent shooting.
