Janet A. Sanford, 72, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, January 24, 2019, at her home. She was born January 23, 1947, in Milford, MA, to Joseph D. and Yolanda C. (DeBaggis) Sciolto.
She attended Franklin High School in Massachusetts. Janet was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Cursillo, and St. Vincent de Paul. She was a patient care assistant at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Massachusetts.
On January 23, 1965, she married Robert J. Sanford Sr. in Franklin, MA. He survives. Other survivors include: sons, Robert Sanford Jr. and wife Deborah of Shelton, CT, Michael Sanford and wife Jennifer of Attleboro, MA, and Timothy Sanford and wife Dawn of Hutchinson; daughter, Amie Leslie and husband Garret of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Caitlin, Jake, Amber, Isabella, Ally, Gracie and Alex; and sister, Joanne Curtis and husband Daniel of Bellingham, MA. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, David Sciolto.
Parish Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2019, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, officiated by Father Michael J.Maybrier. Interment will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson.
Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary. Visitation with the family present will follow the Parish Rosary on Wednesday at the church.

Katrina Marie Wiard-Stussy went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 24, 2019, from Diversicare, Hutchinson. She was born April 20, 1974, in Hutchinson, to Leonard E. ‘Gene’ and Peggy (Day) Wiard.
Katrina attended schools in the Fairfield and Nickerson school districts and graduated from Nickerson High School in 1993. She attended HCC and Sterling College. Band and instrumental music were activities that made it worth the effort to deal with challenges that she regularly encountered. Katrina was a member of TOPS #KS 9153 and was active in 4-H and explored many projects including knitting, crocheting, foods, junior leadership, and others. She learned that success required determination to be successful and that continued effort often produced results that were above her physical abilities. Katrina used her skills to create custom crafts for gifts and sale.
She is survived by: her husband; mother; ‘adopted’ brother and niece, Jake and Hunter McMillin; furry children, Axle and Peter; and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Katrina was preceded in death by: her father, Gene Wiard; grandparents, Gene and Edith Day, and Herman and Lois Wiard.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Steve Gill officiating. A private family inurnment will be held. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team tied a season high with 12 3-pointers and gave their head coach a milestone victory on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Coaching his fourth NJCAA team, Eck reached 600 junior college coaching wins as the No. 17 Blue Dragons were on fire from beyond the 3-point line in a 95-76 Jayhawk West victory over Colby.
Eck, who has coached at Butler County, Redlands, Cowley and Hutchinson, reached 600 wins in 705 games coached. Eck, who will be inducted into the NJCAA Coaches Association Hall of Fame in March, is Hutchinson’s career leader in coaching wins with 278.
The Blue Dragons improve to 18-3 overall and 9-3 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson travels to Barton on Wednesday in Great Bend. Colby falls to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the Jayhawk West.
Hutchinson tied a season high with 12 3-pointers in 18 attempts. At one point, the Blue Dragons hit 10 of their first 14 attempts from distance against the Trojans. The Dragons knocked down 4 of 6 3-pointers in the first half in building a decisive 44-27 lead. The Dragons hit six 3-pointers in the first 7:46 of the second half to extend their lead to 68-43 with 12:14 to go in the game.
D.J Mitchell was a perfect 4 of 4 from 3-point range. Chris Giles hit his first four shots from long range and finished 4 of 5. Tyler Brown had a season-high three 3-pointers to aid in the 3-point barrage. The Dragons tied their season high when they hit 12 against NOC-Enid on November 6.
Mitchell led four Blue Dragons in double figures with 17 points, hitting 6 of 6 field goals.
Sophomore James Rojas returned to the line-up after missing the last five games and finished with 16 points. Giles also had 16 points. Brow finished with nine points. Saquan Singleton had eight points and eight rebounds.
The Blue Dragons shot 51.5 percent (35 of 68) and went 13 of 23 from the foul line. Hutch was out-rebounded for the fourth time in the last five games 41-40.
Colby shot 39.4 percent from the floor (26 of 66), going 4 of 19 from 3-point range and 20 of 34 from the three-throw line.
Eddie Davis scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Trojans. Craig Beaudoin had 11 and Moses Bol had 10 points.
The Blue Dragons trailed early 10-7, but Giles hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Dragons a 13-10 lead. Those treys sparked what became an 18-2 run. Two Malique Jacobs free throws with 8:45 left gave Hutch a 25-12 lead.
Giles hit his third 3-pointer of the half with 1:46 left to give Hutch its first 20-point lead at 40-20. The Blue Dragons his 18 of 36 shots in the first half to Colby’s 9 of 31 shooting and the Blue Dragons took a 44-27 lead at halftime.
Hutch continued to blister Colby from long range. Three Brown treys early in the second half upped the margin to 24 points at 55-31 with 17:20 to go. Giles’ fourth 3-pointer of the game opened up a 26 points lead and Mitchell’s 3-pointer with 12:14 to go – Hutch’s sixth of the second half – Gave the Dragons a 68-43 lead.
Mitchell struck again from 3-point range with 9:22 to go to build a 75-52 lead. The lead was still at 20 at 81-61 when the Trojans went on a 12-3 run to make the Sports Arena faithful a little nervous. But a Taylor dunk after the Dragons broke Colby’s full-court press snapped the run and the Dragons closed the game on an 11-3 run.

GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 49-4 all-time vs. Colby, including 26-1 at the Sports Arena. This was all-time Blue Dragon win No. 1,798. Hutch shot 50 percent or better for the eighth time this season. The four 3-pointers by Colby tied an opponent low this season. Rojas returned to the line-up after missing the last five games.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sophomore Jada Mickens scored a season-high 20 points and the No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team maintained its one-game lead in the Jayhawk West with a decisive victory over the Colby Trojans on Saturday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons shot 52.6 percent in a 98-56 win over the Trojans. The Blue Dragons are 12-0 in the Jayhawk West. Combined with Seward County’s win over Barton on Saturday, Hutch maintains a one-game lead over the Saints.
Hutchinson improves to 21-0 overall. Colby falls to 8-12 overall and 3-9 in conference play. The Blue Dragons travel to Barton on Wednesday.
The Blue Dragons scored the first eight points of the game and then held the Trojans scoreless for 5 minutes, 4 seconds in building a 20-7 lead after one quarter. Hitting 10 of 14 shots in the second, the Blue Dragons extended their lead to 44-24 by halftime. Hutch then left no doubt with a 31-12 third quarter and led 75-36 after three period.
Mickens hit 10 of 12 shots to lead the Blue Dragons with 20 points. She added eight rebounds.
Sophomore Dejanae Roebuck moved into the Blue Dragon Top 20 in career scoring with an 18-point, six-rebound performance. Roebuck is now tied with Jasmine Patterson for 19th place on the career scoring list with 769 points.
Milan Schimmel was the only other Blue Dragon to score in double figures with 10 points, four assists and three rebounds. Keeley Tini finished with nine points and tied a career high with 12 rebounds.
Abby Ogle, Lauryn Mapusua and Makayla Johnson had eight points each.
The Blue Dragons were 40 of 76 shooting (52.6 percent) for the game. Hutch has a season low three 3-pointers on 14 attempts while going 15 of 23 from the foul line. Hutchinson dominated Colby 51-24 on the boards and dished out 28 assists.
Colby was limited to 36.8 percent shooting (21 of 57), going 6 of 12 from 3-point range and 11 of 16 from the foul line. Colby committed 18 turnovers.
Kaitlyn Guillory led the Trojans with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Dixon had 15 points and Kiara Knight had 11 points.
The Dragons started fast with an 8-0 run, holding Colby scoreless for the first 4:10 of the quarter. Leading 12-5, a bucket by Mickens, three Roebuck free throw and a Schimmel 3-pointer gave the Dragons a 20-5 lead with 1:17 to play in the opening quarter. Colby went scoreless again for 4:39 of the first quarter. Tamia Mobley scored with 1 second to play in the period to break that drought, but Hutch led 20-7 after one quarter.
Hutch shot 71.4 percent in the second half, but had trouble pulling away from Colby. The Dragons led 32-19 before back-to-back inside buckets by Roebuck and Ogle boosted the Hutch lead to 36-19 with 4:05 left. A Mapusua layup gave Hutch its first 20-point lead of the game at 42-21. Tini then scored in side with 20 second left to send the Blue Dragons into halftime with a 44-24 lead.
The Blue Dragons opened the second half on a 20-5 run to break the game open. Roebuck hit a pair of free throws to give the Dragons a 64-29 lead with 4:08 remaining in the third. Schimmel’s second 3-pointer of the game moved the lead to 39 points at 71-32 with 2:10 left.
GAME NOTES – Hutch is now 49-14 all-time vs. Colby. The 98 points scored are the third-most Hutch has scored against Colby in series history. This was Blue Dragon all-time win No. 964. The 31 points in the third quarter is the most scored in a third quarter by the Dragons this season and it’s the fourth time Hutch has scored at least 30 in a quarter this season. This was the sixth time this season Hutch has shot 50 percent or better in a game. This was Hutch’s sixth 90-plus point game this season. This was Jada Mickens’ fifth career 20-point game. Hutch has now held 19 opponents to less than 40 percent shooting.

The two teams were equally matched and it showed in their long battle on the court.
Trinity led 17-14 after one.
The Celtics fell behind 32-30 at halftime.
Trinity’s Evan Remar skillfully faked out Sacred Heart’s defense to pull the Celtics within four at 45-41.
Just a second before the end of regulation, the Knights hit a jumper to send the game into OT tied at 59.
Sacred Heart briefly pulled ahead, but fouled Trinity right before the buzzer. Evan Remar made both of his free throws to tie the game at 66 and send it into double overtime.
The Celtics used free throws to seal the 75-71 victory.
Trinity travels to Bennington Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m.

Virgil L. Wenzel, 89, died January 24, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born July 28, 1929, in Pretty Prairie, to Joseph F. and Francis Isabell (Riley) Wenzel.
Virgil graduated from Hutchinson High School. Following high school, Virgil joined the family business, Wenzel Construction in 1943, where he worked until his retirement. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior August 2, 1952. He served as a lay preacher at the former Evangelical Free Church, Hutchinson, and was a member of the former Westbrook Baptist Church.
On May 30, 1948, he married Lois Randles in Hutchinson. She died September 26, 2013.
Virgil is survived by: children, Cheryl Briggs (Will) of Hutchinson, Mike Wenzel (Carol) of Kermit, TX, Janey Vanderpool (Rick) of Hutchinson, DeAnna Hengle (Mike) of Missouri, RJ Wenzel of South Hutchinson, Ginny Brawner (Todd) of Hutchinson; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers; and one sister.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Eldon Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Council of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
Richard C. Putnam, 82, formerly of Hutchinson, died January 22, 2019, at his home. He was born January 23, 1936, in Hutchinson, to Carle Crawford and Lucile Evora (Stevens) Putnam.
Richard graduated from Manuel High School in Denver, Colorado in 1954. He served in the United States Navy. Richard was a farmer and hydraulic engineer for Eaton. He was of the Methodist faith.
On September 14, 1968, he married Elenora E. (Fruehauf) Porter in Hutchinson. Richard is survived by: his wife of 50 years, Elenora; son, Randall Brewer, both of Searcy, Arkansas; brother, Ronald Putnam of Jacksonville, AR; sister-in-law, Judith Putnam of Woodbury, NJ; nephews; Andrew Putnam (Regina) of Woodbury, NJ, Timothy Putnam (Suzie) of West Deptford, NJ; great-niece, Abigail Putnam of Woodbury, NJ; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, the Reverend Ramon Putnam.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
