Mustangs exhaust Cougars

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Central Christian High School lost to Macksville High School in Tuesday night’s game 61-45.

The Mustangs were fast to break ahead as they finished the first quarter with a 10 point lead of 16-6 over the Cougars.

Free throws were the main source of points for Central Christian as they gained five from points plus one field goal shot. However, the Mustangs brought in 17 points to lead 33-13.

Macksville kept its hot streak and continued to outscore Hutchinson 44-19 in the third quarter.

The Mustangs finished the last quarter strong to defeat the Cougars 61-45.

The Central Christian Cougars travel to Caldwell to face the Caldwell Bluejays on Friday at 7 p.m.

Hutchinson falls to Haysville Campus

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School lost to Haysville Campus High School 71-55 in Tuesday night’s game.

The Colts quickly took the reins in the first, ending quarter with a lead of 18-6 over the Salthawks.

The hustle was kept steady in the second quarter as Hutchinson tailed Campus 34-23. The Salthawks produced two 3-pointers plus 11 extra points.

Hutchinson was 11 points behind Campus by the end of the third quarter.

The Salthawks couldn’t keep up in the final quarter and lost the the Colts 71-55.

Hutchinson plays Great Bend at the Salthawk Activity Center on Friday, 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Central Christian defeats Macksville

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Central Christian Cougars slid past the Macksville Mustangs 42-38 in a close game on Tuesday night.

Central Christian’s point guard Lindsey Kauffman goes in towards the basket. Kauffman is a junior at CCS.

The Cougars were on their toes in the first quarter as the Mustangs were only one point behind, 10-9.

With 5:30 left in the second half, Macksville tied the game 12-12. But a minute later, Central Christian’s Krysten Bartlett broke the tie with a slick two point shot.

After haltime’s score of 21-17, the Cougars barely kept their lead as the end of third quarter’s score was 33-31, leaving the Mustangs only two points behind.

The Cougars and the Mustangs fought hard all throughout the game but Central Christian took the win of 42-38.

Central Christian High School travels to face Caldwell High School on Friday, 14, at 6 p.m.

Salthawks race past Colts

WITCHITA, Kan. — The Hutchinson High Salthawks defeated the Haysville Campus High Colts 37-25 in Tuesday night’s game.

Hutchinson took charge in the first quarter and only let Campus score one point against its nine.

In the second quarter, the Salthawks did not give up their lead and ended the first half with a 24-9 lead.

The Salthawks continued to keep their advancment and had double the points of the Colts, 28-14.

The varsity girls finished the night with a win over Haysville Campus 37-25.

Hutchinson faces Great Bend at the Salthawk Activity Center on Friday at 6 p.m.

Raleigh Harold Owen | 1943 – 2018 |

Raleigh ‘Harold’ Owen, 74, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, December 8, 2018. He was born December 23, 1943, in Lincoln, NE, to Raleigh Lynn and Goldie Marie (Ferguson) Owen.

Harold was a taper and dry wall specialist for over 40 years in Nebraska and Kansas.

On January 20, 1969, he married Maryann Margaret Eichberger in Lincoln, NE. Harold is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Maryann of Hutchinson; sons, Scott and wife Linda, Chris and wife Sally, Todd and wife Mary, all of Hutchinson, Danny and wife Kim of Nickerson; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his siblings and their spouses, Carl and Joyce Owen, Shirley and Jim McGrath, and Donna and Tony Mack; and granddaughter, Carly Guyll.

Parish Rosary will be 6 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2018, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 East 5th Avenue, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018, at the church with Father Michael J. Maybrier presiding. Burial will be in Wildmead Cemetery, Nickerson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter or Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Robert Lee “Bob” Hornback | 1951 – 2018 |

Robert Lee ‘Bob’ Hornback,67, died December 8, 2018, at his home. He was born January 2, 1951, in Fowler, the son of Elmer Loel and Joan Yvonne (Alexander) Hornback. The family moved to rural Cherryvale, KS, in 1956.

Bob graduated from Labette County High School in 1969 and Kansas State College vocational school in Pittsburg in 1972. He worked at Cessna Fluid Power (which became Eaton Fluid Power in 1988) from 1972 to 2009, when he retired as a Lead Manufacturing Engineer. During retirement, Bob enjoyed drag racing his 1969 Camaro and doing woodworking projects.

On May 15, 1971, he married Marguerite ‘Margy’ Shepherd in Parsons. She survives.

Also surviving are: sons, Michael Hornback and wife Tara of Olathe, Mitchell Hornback and wife Tonya of Hutchinson; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Jeremy, Koalton, Blake, Reid, and Fallon; one great grandchild, Jacob; a brother, Richard ‘Dick’ Hornback and wife Dana of Parsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Tom Scott officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018, in Harmony Grove Cemetery, rural Cherryvale. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the ALS Association, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College gained another win on Saturday night against Butler Community College and finished off the night with a score of 78-56.

There was a slow start to the game but Hutchinson’s Boubacar Kamissoko ended the scoreless drought with a successful free throw to tie 4-4 with nine minutes left in the first half.

With four minutes to play in the first, the Blue Dragons were in the midst of a 13-2 run and led 19-9 over the Grizzlies.

Hutchinson’s D.J. Mitchell scored in transition and then completed an And-1. This lead to the Dragons advancing 27-18 at halftime.

Mitchell grasped more points and knocked down a 3-pointer to give a 47-25 lead over Butler with 11:30 left. He finished off the night as top player with 29 points and eight rebounds.

With back to back 3-pointers from Mitchell and Tyler Brown, Hutchinson defeated Butler 78-56 in Saturday night’s game.

Hutchinson rises over Butler

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 8 Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons defeated the No. 6 Butler Community College Grizzlies in Saturday night’s game 77-61.

The Dragons started strong with a nine point lead, but the Grizzlies fought back and managed to tie the game 18-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Hutchinson’s Lauryn Mapusua nailed a 3-pointer with 3:50 left in the second quarter for a 33-27 lead over Butler.

The Dragons quickly grabbed points as Makayla Vannett rung the bell from the 3-point range not even a minute into the third quarter to lead 43-35. Hutchinson kept their lead to finish off the quarter with 57-48 against Butler.

Hutchinson’s Jada Mickens started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and advanced the score to 60-48. Mickens finished off the night with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Dejanae Roebuck had a putback right after Mickens for two more points on the Dragons. Roebuck was the top player in Saturday’s game with 17 points and six rebounds.

The Dragons finished the game strong to take over the Grizzlies 77-61 for their 11th straight win.

Hutchinson Community College travels to Concordia to take on Cloud County Community College Wednesday at 6 p.m.
