Roebuck’s record game brings Dragons past Ichabod JV

TOPEKA, Kan. — Sophomore forward Dejanae Roebuck led a 3-point barrage for the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team on Wednesday at Venerable Lee Arena in Topeka.

Roebuck hit a career-best five 3-pointers and led the No. 13 Blue Dragons to a season-high 14 treys in an 84-53 victory over the Washburn University Junior Varsity.

Hutchinson improves to 4-0 and will conclude its four-game road trip on Saturday in McPherson against the Central Christian College JV.

The Blue Dragons were 14 of 29 from 3-point range, tying for the second-most 3-pointers in single-game history. The Blue Dragons hit 14 3-pointers two seasons ago against Colby. The record for most 3-pointers in a game is 16 against Neosho County.

Roebuck was a perfect 5 of 5 from 3-point range. She matches the team season high for a player this season, tying Makayla Vannett, who had five against NEO on Saturday in Great Bend. Vannett had three 3-pointers of her own on Wednesday. Kelsey Brett was 3 of 3 from behind the arc. Milan Schimmel, Tia Bradshaw and Keeley Tini also had 3-pointers.

Roebuck just missed her second-straight double-double, finishing with a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds. Roebuck was 9 of 15 shooting overall. Roebuck’s previous career high was 23 points, scored twice last season. Her previous season high was 22 points against Murray State last week in Great Bend.

Schimmel was the only other Blue Dragon to score in double figures with 13 points. Vannett and Brett had nine points each and Jada Mickens added seven.

Freshman Abby Ogle had six points, but had team highs of seven assists and six steals against the Ichabods.

The Blue Dragons were 32 of 69 shooting overall (46.4 percent) and only went to the free-throw line eight times, hitting six.

Hutchinson out-rebounded Washburn 35-23 and forced 29 Ichabod turnovers. The Blue Dragons amassed 23 assists and 17 steals, but still had 17 turnovers.

Hayley Thompson had 21 points to lead Washburn. Adyson Narber had 12 points.

Washburn hit 19 of 41 shots for the game (46.3 percent). The Ichabods were seven of 11 shooting in the third quarter, a period Hutchinson outscored Washburn 21-18. Washburn was four of nine from 3-point range and 11 of 15 from the foul line.

The Blue Dragons never trailed in the game, which was tied 5-all in the early going. The Dragons led 24-17 after one quarter, but extended the lead to 41-27 by halftime on 4 of 6 3-point shooting in the second quarter.

The Blue Dragons travel to McPherson to face against Central Christian College JV at 3 p.m.

Donna Nadine Mitzner | 1942 – 2018 |

Donna Nadine Mitzner, 76, died Monday, November 12, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born June 2, 1942, in Stafford, the daughter of Floyd H. and Wilma W. (Eidson) Heyen. Donna graduated from Stafford High School in 1960.

She was a farm wife, homemaker, and helped her husband with his business, Gene’s Furs. Donna belonged to Fairview United Methodist church, where she played the piano for services and was active in the United Methodist Women.

On April 12, 1963, Donna married Charlie E. ‘Gene’ Mitzner in Great Bend. He died May 24, 2011.

She is survived by: daughters, Linda Mitzner of Sterling and Brenda Unruh and husband Troy of Arlington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Gene.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2018, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in the Fairview Church cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Fairview United Methodist Church or Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Margie Zink | 1940 – 2018 |

Margie Zink, 78, of South Hutchinson, died November 11, 2018. She was born August 26, 1940, in Sylvia, to William and Nevil Gladys (Heggy) Marshall.

Margie graduated from Sylvia High School in 1958 and beauty school. She worked as a beautician for a short period of time before working at Lyons Grade School as a paraprofessional and at TECH as an aide. Margie was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, St. Teresa Altar Society, and was in charge of the prayer line at the church for 15 years.

On September 14, 1976, she married Christopher ‘Chris’ Zink in Lyons. Margie is survived by: her husband of 42 years, Chris; daughters, Christi Hutchinson-Anderson (Sean), all of South Hutchinson, Sonya Huey-Ramkeesoon (John) of Queens, New York; sister, Darlene McCluskey of Prairie Village; and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Lee Herman.

Parish Rosary will be 10 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2018, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th, Hutchinson, with Father Michael J. Maybrier officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church Cemetery, Bushton with Father Rick Kotrba officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday with the family present Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marjorie Zink Memorial Fund, St. Teresa Catholic Church, or Birthright, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Beverly J. “Bev” Hendershot | 1928 – 2018 |

Beverly J. ‘Bev’ Hendershot, 90, of Hutchinson, died November 9, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born August 14, 1928, in Hutchinson, to Jack and Ara (Snodgrass) Pointon.

She graduated from Haven High School in 1946. Beverly began her working career assisting her father, Jack Pointon, with his dry cleaning and tailoring business in Haven. She worked for Dillon’s for over 30 years, retiring in 1988. Beverly was a member of the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church and Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary.

On September 23, 1948, she married Robert ‘Bob’ Hendershot in Hutchinson. He died December 17, 2014.

Survivors include: son, Randy Hendershot and wife Susan of Auburn, KS; daughter, Robin Clark and husband Tom of Junction City; granddaughters, Kerrie Iams and husband Brad and Errin Brown and husband Jeremy, all of Topeka, and Alexandria Clark of Junction City; great grandchildren, Bryson and MacKenzie Iams and Hadley and Cason Brown of Topeka.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Robert ‘Bob’ Hendershot; grandson, Sean Clark; sisters, Ruth (West) Erhardt and Maurine (West) Smith; and maternal grandmother, Sierra Nevada Snodgrass.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2018, at Elliott Mortuary with Reverend Richard Brooks officiating. Burial will take place in Laurel Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2018, at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to Tenth Avenue Methodist Church or Alzheimer’s Association in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

James Wayne Paris, 47, of Hutchinson, died November 6, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.

He was born November 21, 1970, in Wichita, to Gary and Bonnie (Cape) Paris, Sr. Cremation has taken place and per his wishes, there will be no service.

Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, is in charge of arrangements.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team surpassed the 100-point mark for the third-straight game and closed out its stay at the Best Western/Cougar Booster Club Classic with a pair of wins.

James Rojas and D.J. Mitchell both had career highs as the No. 9 Blue Dragons raced past the Redlands Cougars 117-85 in a fast-paced game on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons move to 5-0, including 3-0 on a current five-game road trip. The Blue Dragons play Murray State and Labette next weekend in El Dorado. Redlands falls to 0-4.

Hutchinson scored 100-points in a game in three straight games for the first time since the 1991-92 season. This is only the fifth time in program history to reach the century mark in three-straight games. No Hutchinson team has ever scored 100 or more points in four-straight games.

Rojas scored a career-high 28 points on 10 of 14 shooting and 7 of 8 from the foul line. Rojas added six rebounds.

Mitchcell had a second-straight big game with 25 points on 4 of 7 shooting from 3-point range.

Mitchell had seven rebounds.

Five Blue Dragons scored in double figures. Chris Giles had 13 points, while Fred Odhiambo and Josh Perkins had 10 points each.

The Blue Dragons had season highs in points scored, field goal percentage (60.5) and made field goals 46 of 76. The Dragons hit 7 of 13 from 3-point and 18 of 27 from the free-throw line. Hutch had a 50-30 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 16 times.

The Blue Dragons had a season-high 60 points in the first half and led by 19 points at intermission. The Dragons outscored Redlands 57-44 in the second half.

A.J. McNeil had 19 points with Anthony Love scoring 18 points.

WBB: Hutchinson handles NEO

GREAT BEND, Kan. — The No. 13 Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons defeated the No. 20 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Lady Norse in Saturday’s game 82-57.

Dejanae Roebuck’s free throws with three minutes left in the first quarter gave Hutchinson a 17-12 lead.

A layup from Hutchinson’s Tia Bradshaw gave the Dragons a 22-12 advantage headed into the second quarter.

Four seconds before halftime, Hutchinson’s Milan Schimmel hit a jumper to give the Blue Dragons a 48-23 lead.

Each team scored 34 points in the second half.

The Dragons nabbed 44 rebounds and shot 51.9 percent from the floor.

Hutchinson Community College (3-0) will take on the Washburn University JV in Topeka Wednesday at 4 p.m.
