HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Salthawk volleyball had a nice showing at the SAC Tuesday night and picked up a pair of wins.

The Hawks continued their dominance over Salina Central by beating the Mustangs in straight sets for the second time in a week. The Hawks then knocked off state-ranked Newton 2-0.

Hutchinson is now 11-10 on the season.

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler had to settle for a split in two matches Tuesday.

The Crusaders defeated El Dorado 2-0, but fell to McPherson 2-0.

Faith Kretzer had a big match against El Dorado with 11 kills. Hadley Waldren made the most of her opportunities with five kills in nine attempts.

The Crusaders are 15-14 on the year and 4-4 in conference play.

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — In tough conditions on a tough course, the Hutchinson Salthawk golf team came up six shots short of a trip to state at the 6A regional tournament held at Buffalo Dunes. Hutchinson’s team total of 460 was just behind Derby.

Three Salthawk golfers qualified for the state meet. The Salthawks were led by Reagan Martin, who finished the day in fourth place with an 18-hole total of 99. Meredith Kinney was right behind her in seventh, carding a 107. Carter McFadden will also go to state after a 17th place finish with a 125.

The 6A state meet is set for Monday, Oct. 15, at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

GOTHENBURG, Neb. — Charlie Herbert shot a 1-over 73 in wet scoring conditions to lead the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team to second place after the opening round of the NJCAA District III Preview at Wild Horse Golf Club.

The second round was supposed to be played Monday afternoon, but was called off. The tournament, weather permitting, will be completed with a single-round on Tuesday morning.

The Blue Dragons shot a 15-over 303 in the opening round on Monday and trail Indian Hills by 14 strokes. Iowa Western and Dodge City are tied for third after 307s. Garden City is fifth at 315.

Herbert’s 73 ties him for fourth individually. He trails Indian Hills’ George Clark by four shots after Day 1.

Charlie Crockett and Peyton Austin are tied for eighth after 3-over 75s on Monday. The Blue Dragons also had to count Nathan McCulloch’s 80 in the team score. Sophomore Lake Leroux shot an 82.

Individual player Max Ontjes shot a 7-over 79 and is tied for 23rd.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Despite a career night from sophomore Elena Takova, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team’s inconsistent passing doomed the Blue Dragons in a four-set Jayhawk West loss to Colby on Monday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won the first set, but Colby took advantage of Hutch’s passing issues late in the final three sets to snap a nine-match losing streak to the Dragons in the Arena with a 24-26, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20 victory.

Hutchinson falls to 12-10 overall and 7-4 in the Jayhawk West heading into Wednesday’s road match at Garden City. Colby is now 20-1 overall, 10-1 in the Jayhawk West. The Trojans sweep the season series with Hutchinson for the first time since 2011, which was the last time the Trojans defeated the Blue Dragons at the Arena.

Takova had 25 kills and only four attack errors on 64 swings to hit .328 on Monday night in leading the Blue Dragons. Takova’s 25 kills ties Dragana Micic for sixth most in Blue Dragon single-match history. Her 25 kills also tie Micic for the second most in a four-set match in Hutchinson volleyball history. Takova had 20 kills through three sets.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit .188-.168, but total kills were tied at 56. The Trojans out-blocked the Dragons 8-6, but Hutch had 103 digs in the match to Colby’s 92. The 103 digs tied for fifth most in a four-set match in HutchCC history.

The big difference was that Colby had 10 service aces to none for the Dragons, which is the first time in 2018 the Dragons didn’t record a service ace.

Sophomore Cassidy Crites had her ninth double-double of the season with 27 assists and a career-high 22 digs. She also added four kills and two block assists.

Freshman Delilah Vigil had 10 kills on .304 hitting with five digs and four block assists. Eden Hiebert and Lexi Hogan had six kills each.

Sophomore libero Raychel Reed had 26 digs to jump both Erika Godbolt (2003-04) and Sarah Claborn (2006-07) into fifth place on the Blue Dragon career digs list with 935 career digs. In addition to Reed and Crites, Claira Creach and Hiebert were also in double figures in digs with 15 and 11, respectively.
