Thomas E. ‘Tom’ Turner, 92, of Hutchinson, died June 27, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born February 1, 1927, to Thomas Bryan and Lillie (Knight) Turner in Laurens County, SC.

Tom served over nine years in the United States Navy. He was a co-owner of Central Glass Company, worked at the Kansas State Fair, and USD 308-Hutchinson. Tom enjoyed hunting upland birds, square dancing, and was known for frying the ‘best chicken on 4th Street’ for the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, of which he was a lifetime member. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Nickerson and participated in the parade scooter patrol, and Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On June 26, 1953, he married Mary Lou Eby in Hutchinson. They shared 66 years of marriage. He is survived by: his wife, Mary Lou Turner; sons, Jim (Sherri) Turner, Lawrence, and Bob (Susie) Turner, Hutchinson; grandsons, Matthew (Heather) Turner and Ben (Laura) Turner; granddaughters, Michelle (Jordan) Nuss and Jane Turner; great-grandchildren, Bronson, Carson and Mason; daughter-in-law, Janice Turner; and sister-in-law, Sherry Turner. Tom was preceded in death by: his parents; son, David Turner; brothers, Everett and William ‘Buddy’ Turner; and sister, Fannie Sue Turner.

A Celebration of Life reception will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2019, at American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, 730 W. 4th, Hutchinson, with a Service of Remembrance at 1 p.m to be officiated by the Reverend Richard Brooks. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Darrell Anschutz, 81, passed away June 26, 2019 at Hospice House. Darrell was born October 3, 1937, the son of Raymond and Mary (Day) Anschutz in Lucas, Kansas.

He was a 1955 graduate of Lucas High School and is a veteran of the US Army. He moved to the Hutchinson Area in 1960 and made the area his home for the next 59 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Reid and a sister Ella Mae (Anschutz) Lindblom and his granddaughter Carissa (Anschutz) Freeman.

Darrell is survived by sons, John (Belinda) Anschutz of Sterling and Jeffery Anschutz (Joe Kwan) of San Diego; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2019 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, Hutchinson, KS, with Pastor Montie McFerrin officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS. Memorials may be given to the Hospice House and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Mary Hightower, 83, died Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village.  She was born January 12, 1936, in Kingman, to Herbert and Mamie Anne (Brawner) Hopkins.

Mary retired from the food service department at Hutchinson Community College.  She was of the Christian faith.

On July 14, 1954, she married James Sawyer Hightower in Enid, OK.  He died April 27, 2011.

Mary is survived by: daughters, Jamie Borders and husband Monte, and Connie Crenshaw; grandchildren, Stacy Borders, Myron Shuler, Kristy Schwind and husband Tim, Jennifer Hart, Corey Borders and wife Jami; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Yoder, Trinity Schwind, Kyndal Borders, Grant Schwind, and Mariah David.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; one sister; three brothers; and grandson, Gary Borders.

Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2019, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W.  4th Avenue, with Pastor Jeffrey S. Arnold officiating.  Friends can sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Mary Hightower Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. William Brian ‘Bill’ Main, 59, died Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born April 4, 1960, in Hutchinson, to John A. and Darlene M. (Carsten) Main.

Bill graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended the University of Kansas. He worked for many years at Siding Supply, as well as doing his own siding work. Bill was an avid cyclist and Kansas Jayhawks fan.

He is survived by: his mother, Darlene, Hutchinson; sister, Kimberly McCamant (David), Hutchinson; and nephew, Cooper McCamant, Lenexa.

Bill was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Elmer Nisly, 79, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born October 20, 1939, in Hutchinson, to Edward D. and Elizabeth (Yoder) Nisly.

He was a member of Center Amish Mennonite Church and retired dairy farmer. He was involved with Offender Victim Ministries and Prison Ministries at Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

On March 1, 1964, he married Cora C. Yoder in Montezuma, GA. They shared over 55 years of marriage.

Elmer is survived by: his wife, Cora; children, Yvonne Sommers and husband David of Oswego, Violet Byler and husband Larry of Hutchinson, Brenda Nisly and husband Arlyn of Partridge, and Julian Nisly and wife Bertha of Hutchinson; siblings, Vera, Barbara, William, Harley and John Nisly, all of Hutchinson, Lester Nisly of South Carolina; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Daniel Nisly; and sister, Laura Nisly.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Center Amish Mennonite Church, 7611 W. Morgan Road, with Pastors LaVerne Miller, David Yoder and Dwight Miller officiating. Burial will follow in West Center Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2019, at the church.

John H. Shaffer, 92, of Hutchinson, died June 24, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born April 2, 1927, in Wichita, the son of Don and Mabel (Jones) Shaffer. John was a 1945 graduate of Hutchinson High School, a 1948 graduate of Hutchinson Community College, a 1950 graduate of the University of Kansas, and a 1954 graduate of Washburn University School of Law. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Coast Guard. John was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson.

On August 17, 1951, John married Lorene Frank in Hutchinson.

Upon graduating from Washburn Law School, John joined the law firm of Weinlood, Cole, Ehling & Oswalt as an associate on March 1, 1954. John became a partner in the law firm January 1, 1958, at which time the firm’s name was changed to Weinlood, Cole, Ehling, Oswalt & Shaffer. The firm’s name changed several times over the years, and on October 1, 1990, the firm of Weinlood, Cole, Shaffer, Lee & Meisenheimer merged with the law firm of Martindell, Swearer, Cabbage, Ricksecker, Hertach, Swearer & Patterson, and the name of the firm was changed to Martindell, Swearer & Shaffer LLP. The name of the firm today is Martindell, Swearer, Shaffer, Ridenour LLP.

John is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Lorene; sons, Scott A. of Aurora, CO, Jeff M. and wife Marcia of Houston, TX, Mark T. of Dallas, TX; and two grandsons, John Michael Shaffer and Luke William Shaffer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Cindi Shaffer.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2019, at Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Drive, officiated by the Reverend Dr. J. Ted Blakley, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, with the family to receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
